We are asking you to be in a research study because we are trying to learn more about how human-computer interaction (HCI) and user experience (UX) is practiced in industry; this information will be used to inform our programs. Cynthia Putnam, Craig MacDonald and Emma Rose are conducting this study.
In this study, we are specifically focusing on storytelling in UX.
We hope to include 36 UX practitioners in this research.
You are invited to participate in this study because you are an HCI/UX expert and you have published on UX storytelling. You must be age 18 or older to be in this study. This study is not approved for the enrollment of people under the age of 18.
If you agree to be in this study, we will ask you to record two stories following our prompts using the Vocal Video Tool. The tool will give you the option of using audio only or video. The first prompt will ask you about a time in which telling a UX story worked well in your work, the second prompt will ask you about a time in which telling a story did not work out as planned.
The Vocal Video tool will allow you to delete and/or re-record.
The audio/video stories are limited to 5-minutes. After each prompt, we ask if there is anything you want to add that you could not fit into the 5-minute limit.
Being in this study does not involve any risks other than what you would encounter in daily life. Potential risks include accidental exposure of intellectual property. You do not have to answer any question you do not want to. All information will be kept completely confidential; your company name will not be used and anyone involved in the study will be given a pseudonym.
You will not personally benefit from being in this study. We hope that what we learn will help inform our programs and pedagogy.
This study will take 15-30 minutes of your time.
You will receive a $30 e-gift card on Amazon.com if you complete both audio prompts. We will send you the gift card over email.
Your participation is voluntary, which means you can choose not to participate. There will be no negative consequences, penalties, or loss of benefits if you decide not to participate or change your mind later and withdraw from the research after you begin participating.
The research records will be kept and stored securely. Your information will be combined with information from other people taking part in the study. When we write about the study or publish a paper to share the research with other researchers, we will write about the combined information we have gathered. We will not include your name or any information that will directly identify you. Some people might review or copy our records that may identify you in order to make sure we are following the required rules, laws, and regulations. For example, the DePaul University Institutional Review Board may review your information. If they look at our records, they will keep your information confidential.
If we use direct quotes from the interviews, we will follow up with you and share the quote and its context.
To prevent others from accessing our records or identifying you should they gain access to our records, we have put some protections in place. These protections include using a code a study ID number for you and other people in the study and keeping the records in a safe and secure place on a password protected computer.
The recordings will be downloaded and stored in a password protected file.
Before you decide whether to accept this invitation to take part in the study, please ask any questions that might come to mind now.
